Austin 7
The most successful car produced in UK, akin to the success of Ford Model T in the US. It dominated the auto market and practically crush all competiting models of British small cars and cycle cars of the early 1920s. In addition, the design was widely licensed and replicated by other manufacturers aboard, among them the BMW Dixi, the American Austins, the French Rosengarts, the Japan Nissan also based the design of their original cars on Austin 7 even though they did not obtain a license. The sale of Austin 7 started rather slower than expected, with 2500 units sold on the first year of its production, but sales pick up rapidly from there, more than 250,000 units were on the road by the time production ended in 1939.
The Austin 7 is much lighter in weight and smaller in size compared to Ford Model T. It has a wheel base of only 1905mm and weight of only 360kg, less than half of a Ford Model T. The car do not have any shock absorbers, suspension is achieved by quarter elliptic springs cantilevered from the rear of the chassis while at the front the beam axle had a centrally mounted half elliptic transverse spring. The engine is a four cylinder 747 cc, 56 mm bore by 76 mm stroke, side valve engine was composed of an aluminium crankcase, cast iron cylinder block and cast iron cylinder head.
The Austin 7 comes in a variety of body styles, ranging from Tourers, Saloons, Cabriolet, Sports, Coupés and Vans.
